Yesterday started out with such promise.  We were all expecting a great day but unfortunately Lexe suffered a setback around 1:00 pm.  Lexe's left lung collapsed causing her oxygen saturation rates to drop to life threatening levels.  It was a very tense situation as the team of providers in the ICU worked hard to stabilize Lexe.  It was very hard to watch.

The decision was made to perform a bronchoscopy.  The pulmonary team inserted a camera and cannula into her lungs to deep suction her lung fields.  She has very thick secretions in both lungs making suctioning difficult.  The physician removed as much of the secretions as possible.  Lexe tolerated the procedure well.  Later in the day her left lung re-inflated. Both lungs still contain secretions affecting Lexe's respiratory output.  She remains ventilated and sedated.  However we hope her oxygen saturation level will improve.

Today the pulmonary team performed another bronchoscopy and removed more of the secretions.  At present Lexe remains critically ill.  We are very hopeful that Lexe can have a quiet evening.  Her heart continues to beat strong and hard, and her fluid output is improving.  At some point, most likely today, Lexe's paralytic medication will be reduced.  She needs to start moving to prevent secondary problems associated with her paralytic state.

  1. So very grateful for the update, I know it is hard to find time and energy with everything happening right now. I have been thinking about you all non-stop. We will continue to pray for Lexe's healing. I wish there were more to say, I know how very difficult this must be for everybody.

  6. You dont know me but my 6 year old son Skyler is fighting Leukemia right now. When he was first diagnosed he spent 5 months inpatient, 3 of which were in the picu on life support. Everything you wrote here today is something all too familiar and one of the scariest and hardest things a parent has to go through. I just want you to know miracles happen. Skyler is here today and thriving and I know Lexe will too. These kids are strong and their bodies are so resiliant! There is an outpouring of prayers on Lexe's behalf. I just want you to know that even though we have never met I am here for you and praying my heart out.

    Stay strong,
    Crystal Isaacson

  9. These updates may be very difficult for you to write, but I want you to know how much we apprecite taking the time to update us on Lexe's condition. We are constantly thinking about you all, and pray for you often. Daily things that occur now take on new meaning. As an example, our daughter last night was being difficult and did not want to go to sleep and we were very frustrated. My wife then thought of Lexe and decided to just hold her and love her. Even less important, I started my work out and was tired and was about to quit early, but thought of Lexe and what she would give in order to be able to work out right now, so I finished my work out thinking of her. These are random, seemingly stupid examples, but occur often. You are in our hearts. Lexe is an amazing inspiration for us. thank you.

  11. You don't know me directly, but my Father-in-law is Eric Falk.

Lexe's condition takes us back as our Mason's (AML) PICU experience is strikingly similar. They were the very worst days of my life and my heart just aches knowing how difficult this is for you as a parent. Oddly enough, it was 5 years ago exactly that we were there listening to a machine breath for him. We can say with complete confidence you are in the best hands possible. PCMC is a sacred and miraculous place.

Please know you have so much love and support. We are praying for you all constantly. After the PICU my favorite quote became this -

"Everyday holds the possibility of a Miracle."

May the Lord provide the miracles that Lexe stands in need of and hold your family tightly in his arms.

    All of our love,
    Chris and Michelle Falk

  12. Unbelievable... We are so sorry. Never commented but we have followed your blog from the beginning, and have been grateful for Lexe's attitude and example. We have been on that Primarys 4th floor with our daughter, and though we would never wish it to happen, we know how much the little ones look up to the older kids. Lexe has come across very selfless and strong, and has made anyone following her fight a better person. May you all be blessed with strength and peace at this time, and may Lexe make great improvements. She is in the best hands up there. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Love, the Huish family

  14. We so appreciate your updates--though its probably the last thing you want to do right now as Lexe struggles. Rachel is constantly checking (we all are!) to see the progress Lexe is making. So many prayers are being offered for Lexe and your family every day! One thing I know is that Heavenly Father is very aware of each one of us and the challenges we face. We hope that you will feel His peace and love as you wait for Lexe to beat this.
